How To Remove Flat Back Earrings
Published: December 9th, 2025
Key Takeaways:
Hold the flat disc, then twist or pull the front stud based on whether your flat back earring is threaded or push-pin.
Identify your earring type first, since removal depends on whether the post screws out or pulls straight out.
Clean your hands, piercing, and jewelry before and after removal, and avoid forcing stuck earrings to prevent injury.
Use hypoallergenic metals and slow, gentle movements when removing or reinserting earrings to reduce irritation and infection risk.
Most flat back earrings can be removed by holding the front stud firmly and gently pulling or unscrewing the flat disc at the back.
But if you’ve never used them before, removing flat back earrings can take some practice. You’ve probably spent time staring at yourself in the mirror, trying to figure out how to get your earring off without bending something or hurting yourself. We see it a lot.
The technique varies slightly depending on whether you have a push-pin or threaded style, but once you know what you're working with, it becomes second nature.
If you're new to flat backs or just want to make sure you're doing it right, you're in the right place. This guide covers safe flat back removal, tools that help, and hygiene tips to keep your piercings healthy and happy.
Flat back studs have a flat disc that sits perfectly flush against your ear—no more poking or irritating like those old-school butterfly backs. (Seriously, once you go flat back, you never go back!) This design makes them more comfortable for everyday wear, especially for cartilage piercings.
So, what kind of flat backs are we working with? There are two main styles:
Sometimes, you’ll also hear flat-back earrings called “labret studs.” They’re commonly used for lip piercings, but sometimes they’re also worn in ears.
Flat back earrings are especially popular for cartilage and sensitive piercings because they reduce pressure and irritation. That makes them ideal for healing piercings, long shifts, and overnight wear. Since healing times for cartilage piercings can take up to 12 months, flat backs can be a real lifesaver.
Before you try to remove your flat backs, it helps to know what kind you're wearing! Trust us, it’ll save you a lot of headache. Here are some ways to tell:
You have push-pin (threadless) flat backs if the post is smooth with no threads, and the front piece pulls straight out. You might notice a slight bend in the pin when removed. That's normal. All of our Cords Club flat backs are push-pin style – no twisting required!
You have threaded flat backs if the front stud has threads or divots that screw into the back post. You'll need to twist counterclockwise to remove it.
To quickly check what kind of flat back earring you have, try gently twisting the front a few times. If it starts to unscrew, it's threaded. If it doesn't budge, it's probably push-pin.
Ready to take your flat backs out? We’ve got you. Here's how to do it safely:
1. First things first: wash your hands and earlobe (we know, we know—but trust us on this one!)
Clean hands prevent bacteria from getting into your piercing. Use soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
2. Hold the flat back firmly
Get a good grip on that flat disc at the back. Use your thumb and index finger to grip the flat disc at the back of your ear, keeping it steady.
3. Now for the fun part: Pull in opposite directions
For push-pin earrings, firmly grasp both ends and twist slightly while pulling the front piece straight out. For threaded earrings, twist the front piece counterclockwise until it loosens, then slide the post out gently.
4. Use clean fingers or rubber gloves for better grip
If the earring is tight, wearing latex or rubber gloves can help you get a better grip.
5. Clean the earring and piercing site afterward
Wipe down your earring with rubbing alcohol or mild soap, and clean the piercing area with saline solution.
Sometimes, your earring still feels stuck. (We get it—so frustrating!) The culprit might be poor tension, a buildup of dead skin cells, or some swelling. It happens to the best of us, so don't panic.
If you’re having trouble removing it, don't yank or use sharp tools like tweezers – you'll just hurt yourself or damage the jewelry. Instead, use a couple of safe methods to loosen the back. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol to remove any buildup, then apply a small amount of petroleum jelly around the post and gently massage it in. Holding a warm compress against the earring can also help reduce swelling.
When to visit a professional piercer
If you've tried everything and the earring still won't come out, or if the area is swollen and painful, head to a professional piercer for help. They have the right tools and experience to remove it safely.
If you’ve been handling your earring a lot, irritation and infection are always a risk. Keeping things clean is the best way to avoid redness, swelling, and annoying soreness. Always clean before and after removal: Use soap and water on your hands and saline solution on your piercings.
Avoid touching open piercings with dirty hands. Bacteria from under your nails can cause infections, especially if your piercing is still healing.
Using hypoallergenic jewelry will also prevent irritation. Materials like titanium and surgical steel stay calm against your skin, while cheap metals cause redness and itching. Dr. Rajani Katta, a dermatologist in Texas, recommends titanium, surgical steel, and gold above 18K. “The exception is white gold,” Dr Katta says, “In order to make white gold, yellow gold is usually mixed with either palladium or nickel. Unless you know for sure that your white gold is free of nickel, don't choose it.”
Cords Club flat backs are made from hypoallergenic materials, safe for sensitive skin. They won't irritate, cause green skin, or tarnish.
Once you’ve removed your earrings, it’s time to put some new ones in – the fun part! Just make sure you do it safely. Wait until your piercing is fully healed, and remember that lobe piercings typically need 6 to 8 weeks. Cartilage piercings often need 3 to 6 months or longer.
Use the Cords Club flat back applicator tool, and insert the narrow end through the front of the hole of your piercing, so it sticks through.
Once the applicator tool is in your piercing, put the post of the back of the earring on the narrow end of the applicator– the one poking out the back of your ear. Carefully guide the post through your piercing. The applicator tool acts like a needle, guiding the back of the earring through (it’s way easier than it sounds, we promise).
Then, hold the back of the earring in place in your ear. For push-pin earrings (like ours), take the front part earring and place it into the back, pushing until you hear a “click” and the earring feels snug. For threaded earrings, screw the front piece clockwise until it's snug.
A couple of tips for easier insertion: Use a mirror so you can see what you're doing. Go slow. If you feel resistance, stop and try again another day.

I have really sensitive ears. What are your pieces made of?
My team and I have sensitive ears, too! Our goal is to provide high quality, affordable, hypoallergenic options for our sensitive-eared girlies. All materials are listed in each product's item description. We use stainless steel, surgical steel, and implant grade titanium in our earrings. These materials are rust and tarnish proof and won't turn your skin green.
If your ears are extra extra sensitive, I recommend giving our flat back earrings a try! They're made of surgical grade materials. Less than 1% of the population is allergic to true implant grade titanium, which makes it the best metal for sensitive skin.
To learn more about why implant grade titanium is awesome, read this peer-reviewed article: https://www.mdpi.com/2079-6412/12/2/214
Note that our gold titanium flat back studs do have an 18K Gold PVD plating. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Is your jewelry waterproof?
Oh yeah! 99% of our earrings are waterproof. Unless otherwise stated (we have a few hand painted statement earrings), you're getting jewelry that you can get wet.
