1. Titanium Earnings
If there's a gold standard for sensitive ears (pun intended), it's titanium. This metal is naturally hypoallergenic and completely nickel-free. Plus, titanium jewelry is lightweight and super durable. You'll barely feel it in your ears, and it won't tarnish or rust.
Professional piercers use implant-grade titanium (ASTM F-136) for fresh piercings because it's so gentle on healing skin. Titanium is the same material used in medical implants and surgical tools. If it's safe enough to live inside your body, it's definitely safe enough for your earlobes!
Cords Club uses titanium in our flat back stud earrings and other styles because we want you to forget you’ve got earrings on (In the best way possible!)
2. Surgical Steel
Surgical stainless steel (specifically 316L stainless steel) is one of the most popular options for skin sensitivities, and for good reason. It's affordable, durable, and safe for most people with healed piercings.
Stainless steel earrings are some of our favorites at Cords Club, and we’ve got tons of cute styles.
But there’s an important note! Surgical steel still contains 8-14% nickel. For most people, this doesn't cause problems because the nickel is stuck so tightly in the alloy. However, if you have an extremely severe nickel allergy, you might still react to it.
3. 14k or Higher Solid Gold
Gold has a reputation for being safe for sensitive ears, but the truth is more complicated. Pure 24k gold has hypoallergenic properties, but it's way too soft for jewelry. That's why most gold jewelry is really a mix of gold and other metals to make it more durable.
Here's the deal with gold: 14k-18k gold works for many people. Higher karat gold has more pure gold and less of the reactive metals that cause problems. 18k is safer than 14k. If you’re looking for gold earrings, make sure they are labeled nickel-free!
The other challenge with gold is that it's expensive, and many companies don't disclose what metals they use in their gold alloys. Even "hypoallergenic gold" can sometimes contain small amounts of nickel or copper that bother sensitive skin.
White gold can also be super misleading! Regular white gold often contains nickel to achieve that silvery color. If you want white gold, make sure it's alloyed with palladium instead of nickel, or just skip it entirely and go for platinum.
4. Platinum
Platinum is the ultimate luxury option that's also incredibly safe! It's a naturally hypoallergenic metal, extremely pure (usually 95% platinum), and so durable that it'll last forever.
Platinum is typically alloyed with other platinum-group metals, not nickel, so it’s safe for even the most sensitive skin. The downside: Platinum is pricey. (Like, really pricey). But, if you're looking for an investment piece that won’t irritate your ears, it's worth considering.
5. Niobium
Never heard of niobium? We don’t blame you – this is a super rare metal! It’s also a hidden gem for sensitive ears. Niobium is 100% pure, so there's nothing mixed in that could cause reactions. It's naturally hypoallergenic, lightweight, and gentle on skin.
Plus, unlike plated jewelry, anodized niobium changes color through an electrical process – no added reactive coatings. Nobium jewelry is perfect for people who react to almost everything, including titanium (though that's super rare). Some people say niobium earrings are so comfortable that they forget they have them in!
6. Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is a solid middle-ground option for sensitive ears, but not all "sterling silver" is created equal!
True 925 sterling silver is made from 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. But some lower-quality pieces, especially from cheap fast fashion stores, can contain trace amounts of nickel, too. And if you're allergic to nickel, even small amounts can cause problems!
Look for the "925" stamp on any silver jewelry (confirms it's genuine sterling silver), and make sure you "nickel-free" labeling as well.
